Orange Arrpw Syracuse University Publications in Continuing Education

Syracuse University Publications in Continuing Education (SUPCE) was founded in 1968 to help meet the demonstrated demand for quality studies in the field of adult and continuing education. At that time, each of the many relevant publications available was reviewed. Earlier, as early as 1950, University College of Syracuse University had published a series of “blue books” in the field; the Library of Continuing Education developed publications in the 1960s; ERIC (Educational Resource Information Center) initiated documents, which the University had published alone or in cooperation with other institutions. All began to be collected under the general rubric of SUPCE. An editor was appointed, reporting to Alexander N. Charters, then vice president for continuing education, and a renowned figure in adult education studies.

Then, in 1969, the Ford Foundation announced approval of a grant to Syracuse University “for activities which would assure the continued availability, distribution, and servicing of materials developed by former grantees of the Fund for Adult Education (FAE).” These grantees were the Center for the Study of Liberal Education for Adults (CSLEA), the American Foundation for Continuing Education (AFCE), and Syracuse University. The University Council for Education for Public Responsibility also contributed to the publications initiative.

The current SUPCE publications are housed within the library system at Syracuse University and are under the auspices of the Academic Institute for Educators of Adults (AIEA) within the School of Education at that institution. Several SUPCE publications are also available online.
