This summer, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Syracuse University will mark our 16th year of providing a week-long science adventure for local 7th and 8th grade students. The Science Horizons program is designed to encourage students’ interest in science and technology and to foster interest in science-oriented careers.
Since this program is fully funded by Bristol-Myers Squibb, there is no cost to your school or to the student you select. This year's Science Horizons program will be held July 7-11 at Syracuse University from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily. Program brochures and forms were mailed on March 24 to all Middle School Principals in Onondaga County.
The summer science adventure includes presentations, hands-on activities and field trips to research sites and employers on campus, and in the Syracuse area. Local science teachers, Syracuse University graduate students, and Science Horizons alumni now in high school, work the Science Horizons program.
Each school will be asked to select one participant and one alternate who would benefit from Science Horizons. (We ask for the name of an alternate who will attend if the participant selection is unable to attend.) The students you pick need not be straight-A students, but should have a strong interest in science, exploration, and problem solving. The student's ability to follow directions and work well with others will also be essential.
We encourage all 7th and 8th grade science teachers to discuss the program and give some thought to who would be interested in, and benefit from, Science Horizons. The school recommendation form, along with the student’s essay and parent’s signed permission form must be received by us no later than April 25.
If your principal has not received the Bristol-Myers Squibb Science Horizons packet, call us at 443-4846. We look forward to having one of your students as a participant in this year's Science Horizons program.
