Geraldine de Berly
Ph.D., Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Director of the (ELI) English Language Institute
Prior to her arrival in Syracuse, Geraldine taught at New Mexico State University, the University of Essex (UK) and the University of Costa Rica. She holds a Ph.D. in educational administration from New Mexico State University, a master's degree in applied linguistics from the University of Essex, and a bachelor's degree in political science from Stanford University. Originally from Cuba, Geraldine is fluent in Spanish, French and Italian. She has designed and taught courses in the following areas: English for Specific Purposes (business, medicine, international relations, electrical engineering, linguistics, law, aviation), English for Academic Purposes, teacher development, international teaching assistant development, university orientation courses, writing, survival English, seminar skills, and intercultural communication. Geraldine is a frequent presenter at state, regional, national and international conferences. She has traveled abroad extensively and has been retained as a consultant by private and public educational organizations.

Betty Briggs
ELI Assistant to the Associate Dean
Betty has been at University College since April of 1998. She provides administrative support to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the English Language Institute, and maintains the ELI monthly budget, financial statements, and payroll.

Steve Foulkrod
Steve has been teaching various classes—Business English, textual, oral, and accuracy—at the ELI for two years following a career as an analyst and inside sales representative for Xerox Corporation. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics and English from St. John Fisher College, and is pursuing a master’s degree in Education from Le Moyne College. Steve is a Syracuse native who is passionate about soccer, which he plays year ‘round. When the weather cooperates, he arranges after-class soccer games twice a week for ELI students. All interested parties – male and female – are welcome to participate. His other interests include mountain hiking, travel, fishing, hunting, and running. Blanca Gallardo
Blanca holds a B.A. in English Literature and an M.A. in Linguistic Studies, both from Syracuse University. She considers herself a loyal Orangewoman. Working with ELI students is highly rewarding because she can adapt instruction to the goals of each individual while teaching main course points to the group as a whole. Because she feels that community life is very important, Blanca is happy to serve as the advisor of the ELI Student Council, a group that organizes activities and encourages involvement in campus life. She has conducted a workshop and practice session focusing on personal self-defense and life planning for young Latinas interested in attending Syracuse University. Steven Richard Lindeman
Steven Lindeman teaches textual writing and grammar accuracy at the ELI . He previously taught ESL and EFL education in Mexico and South Korea. He speaks Spanish and Korean. Steven earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications from Marist College and a master’s degree in journalism from The College of Santa Fe in New Mexico. In his spare time, he enjoys writing fiction and non-fiction stories. Traveling is his favorite activity, because it allows him to meet new people and experience different cultures. Deborah McGraw
Deb has been teaching at the English Language Institute (ELI) since 1999. During the summer, she teaches Business English and Culture to business executives in the ELI's intensive language program for Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. During the academic year, she teaches English for Academic Purposes to international students. Before coming to the ELI, Deb worked as a courseware designer, writer and editor for an educational software company. She also taught English as a Foreign Language as a Distance Learning Instructor: she communicated via the Internet and telephone with students all over the world. However, she prefers interacting with her students in the classroom and feels very fortunate to be teaching now in the ELI. Deb was once an international student herself; she studied for two years at a German university as an undergraduate, then earned her Master's Degree at Cornell University, where she taught for several years in the Department of Modern Languages. Jackie Monsour
Assistant to the ELI Director
Jackie is reponsible for a variety of activities and tasks at the English Language Institute. She handles I-20 forms (immigration) for all ELI applicants and can help students with the application procedure. Jackie keeps copies of students' passports and important information in case any documentation is needed. She also handles any correspondence that students may need to help them get settled in the United States. Jackie overseas student housing, health insurance, and conversation groups. Olga Oganesyan
Olga has been teaching English as a Foreign Language for eight years. At the ELI, she teaches English for Academic Purposes to students preparing for TOEFL and university entrance exams, and English for Business Purposes. Olga earned a B.A. in Teaching English and German as Foreign Languages from Samara Pedagogical University in Russia, followed by an M.A. in Linguistic Studies from Syracuse University. She also earned a certificate through the Legal Assistant Program at University College. In addition to special interests in second language acquisition, teaching culture, legal English, and business English for interpreting/translation, Olga enjoys hobbies like reading, traveling, and cooking. Amy M. Walker
Amy has been teaching English for Academic Purposes at the ELI for more than 20 years. Her professional interests include cross-cultural communication, critical and analytical thinking, writing, and vocabulary. Amy earned a B.A. in Foreign Languages from Elmira College, an M.S. in Foreign Language Education from Syracuse University, and an M.A. in Linguistic Studies from Syracuse University. She has traveled extensively in Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Mexico, and Canada, and is featured in Who’s Who of American Women.
