Orange Arrow Permissions

Permissions | Applied Music | Audit and Pass/Fail Grading Options | Career Override | Independant Study | Special Student Status/Management | Closed Course | Maximum Credits | M.S.W. Advisor Approval | Restricted UC Classes

Permissions
Permissions are used to allow students to register for a course from which they have been blocked because either the course is closed or there are specific restrictions on the course. Some or all of the spaces in a course may be restricted to students in certain years of studies, courses, colleges, campuses, majors, minors, or programs. Other courses always require special permission for enrollment. Restrictions and requirements are noted by a message or appear under the "Comments" column of the class listing in the Time Schedule of Classes. Permission is always required for graduates to register for undergraduate level courses, for undergradutes to register for graduate level courses, and for part-time undergraduates to take more than 11 units (credits) in one semester.

Applied Music
Contact the Setnor School of Music, 215 Crouse College, 315/443-5892, to obtain course and instructor assignment before registering. UC students must bring the Applied Music Registration Form to UC for registration. Payment arrangements must be made at the time of registration and must include all Applied Music fees.

Audit and Pass/Fail Grading Options
An Elect/Rescind Grading Option Application is required if you want to take a credit course for Audit or Pass/Fail. You cannot audit courses which require a Proposal for Independent Study, for experience credit or studio art courses. Certain courses cannot be graded pass/fail and graduate students cannot take courses for pass/fail. You must obtain the appropriate signature on the Elect/Rescind Grading Option Application. Submit the form to the UC Bursar and Registration Operations by the Elect/Rescind Grading Option deadline of the semester in which you are enrolling. Students may also change enrollment in a course from an audit/pass-fail to a letter grade basis through the Elect/Rescind Grading Option deadline for the course. You must submit a Elect/Rescind Grading Option Application form with the appropriate signature, by the Elect/Rescind Grading Option deadline, rescinding the audit or pass/fail option. There is no exception to this deadline. Petitions to extend this deadline will not be accepted.

Career Override (Level Waiver)
A different type of permission is required for undergraduates to register for graduate courses and graduates to register for undergraduate courses (except PED and DTS courses). This permission is in the form of a petition. For UC sections, the appropriate UC program director will sign the petition. Matriculated students also need a separate additional petition to be signed by the department through which their degree program is offered; in the case of UC undergraduates, the UC Advising Office must sign this petition. Both petitions are available at the UC Bursar/Registration Office.

Graduates seeking seats in undergraduate courses may be denied permission to take courses in high demand by undergraduates. Matriculated graduate students will be given permission only if a class has open (unrestricted) spaces.

Independent Study Proposal
All students registering for individualized independent study or experience credit must make arrangements with a faculty sponsor prior to registration. The Independent Study Proposal form must be signed by the faculty sponsor, the department chairperson in which the student is taking the course, the student's advisor and the dean of the students primary college. The completed ISP must accompany registration. Graduate students do not need the dean's signature.
Note:Certain courses may have associated fees.

Special Student Status Letter/Graduate Management
A letter of permission is needed to take graduate courses (600-level or higher) if you are not admitted into a graduate management degree program. The letter must accompany your registration. You may request a letter from the Management School's Master's Program Office. For assistance call 315/443-9215.

Closed Courses
Permission to enroll in a closed UC section must be obtained from the instructor, who then authorizes the UC program director to enter a permission on system. To authorize a permission, the instructor needs the name and SU ID number of the student receiving permission.

Students may obtain permission for closed courses either by contacting the instructor before the class begins or by attending the first class meeting and requesting permission at that time.

Maximum Credits
UC students and visting students can take a maximum of 11 units(credits). Students may petition to take more than the maximum units allowed by completeing a Petition to the Faculty and having it signed by their advisor. Part-time time students will be charged the part-time rate up to and including the 11th credit and the full time rate for the 12th credit and up. Main campus students taking summer classes through University College may take up to 7 credits each session for a total of 14 credits throughout the entire summer.

M.S.W. Advisor Approval
Matrictulated graduate students in the School of Social Work must have their advisor's signature on the registration form, which can be mailed or taken to walk-in registration at University College.

Restricted UC Classes
U-section classes have a certain number of spaces restricted for UC students only. Main campus students are free to register in the open spaces available in U-section classes. Once those open slots are filled, no further registrations by main campus students can occur. Any unused restricted spaces are released (become “open”) on the first day of classes.

Since main campus students already have access to any open spaces, there is no mechanism by which they can request permission for most UC sections. Any exceptions regarding particular classes are stated in the PeopleSoft class notes (click on Class Detail in MySlice). Main campus students who need particular UC sections are advised to register as early as possible.

For U-sections requiring instructor or department consent, UC and main campus students must seek permission directly from the instructor or department. When permission is granted, students must provide the instructor or department with their name and SU ID number. The instructor or department will then request that the appropriate UC program director put the permission on system.

For MC (M-section) course permissions, see Course Permissions in the Time Schedule of Classes.
